Lag screw issue

I used 1/2”x8” lag screws to secure support beams between two trees. I drilled 3/8”x 8” pilot holes but was not able to get the screws all the way in. Should I remove the screws and drill larger pilot holes?

  • Yes, it would be better to try to re-drill these holes than to add more screws. Depending on the width of the threads you may be able to drill at least part of the hole to 1/2" diameter, though you could try 7/16" first to be safe. The strength of the screw comes from the threads cutting into the wood, rather than the wedging effect that holds a nail in place. If the pilot hole is too small it makes it harder to install without adding strength.
